From 1971 until 1992, the GUARDHOUSE was located at the parking lot entrance of the headquarters of the General German News Service (ADN Allgemeiner Deutscher Nachrichtendienst) in East Germany.

Artist Christof Zwiener acquired the last standing guardhouse in June 2013 before its destruction and transformed it into a temporary exhibition space, inviting 10 artists to explore themes of state surveillance and the use of public spaces in Berlin following the reunification of Germany in 1989.

Beginning in September 2014, the ADN GUARDHOUSE travelled to Berlin’s sister city Los Angeles to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall where it will be on view in various locations throughout Los Angeles County, including ESMoA, in cooperation with the Wende Museum in Culver City. While in Los Angeles, Zwiener will continue to explore the consequences of social and political changes in collaboration with international artists Bernd Trasberger, Sonya Schönberger, and Friedrich Kunath.

The journey of the GUARDHOUSE will conclude with the ceremonial transfer to the Wende Museum where it will be permanently installed in the museum’s sculpture garden.
